Governor Dapo Abiodun’s ex-aide, Abidemi Rufai jailed five years for wire fraud


45-year-old Abidemi Rufai, a resident of Lekki, Nigeria, has been sentenced in a U.S. District Court in Tacoma to 5 years in prison for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for his attempt to steal nearly $2.4 million from the United States government, including approximately $500,000 in pandemic-related unemployment benefits, announced U.S. Attorney Nick Brown. 

Abidermi Rufai was arrested in the US last year after been tracked down by the FBI.

As at the time of his US arrest, Abidermi Rufai was the Special Assistant to the Governor of Nigeria’s Ogun State.  He admitted a long history of using stolen identities to defraud U.S. disaster programs, including aid for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and file fraudulent U.S. tax returns.

Prudential Zenith Life Insurance Records 75% Growth In Profit After Tax In Full Year 2021 Results


Prudential Zenith Life Insurance Limited (“PZL”) has announced its audited financial results for the year ended 31st December 2021, recording a 75% growth in profit after tax (PAT) of 1.13b compared to the 646m recorded in the corresponding period in 2020.

 

The results, which was approved by the Board of Directors of Prudential Zenith and the insurance industry regulator, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), shows that Gross Written Premium (GWP) and Annualized Premium Equivalent (APE) grew year on year by 16.3% and 9.3% respectively. This was primarily driven by 27% growth in new business acquisition for Group Life written during the period.

Gov. Akeredolu loses 90 year-old mother


The mother of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, Lady Evangelist Grace Akeredolu is dead.

She died peacefully in her sleep early this morning. Mama was 90 years.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family members.

In a renewed effort to rid the Dangote Group of unscrupulous drivers who engaged in illegal haulage activities and others who constituted themselves into menace to other road users, the company’s drivers’ Patrol team, has made several arrests of drivers, and handed them over to relevant authorities.

Queen Elizabeth II is dead


Buckingham Palace officials issued a statement on Thursday confirming the 96-year-old, who is at her Balmoral residence in Scotland, is suffering from health problems requiring her doctors' intervention.

 "Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral." The news comes the day after the Queen postponed an online meeting of the Privy Council,... during which new Prime Minister Liz Truss would have taken her oath as First Lord of the Treasury, due to medical advice.

She was later pronounced dead by the palace. She was 97.

Ooni of Ife marries new wife


Mariam Anako, the new wife of Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, late on Tuesday arrived at the palace of the monarch in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The new wife was ushered into the palace after brief rites at the entrance to the premises.

She was thereafter led into the inner court of the palace to meet her husband and other guests waiting to receive her.

Oba Ogunwusi in a video shared on the Facebook page of his spokesperson, Moses Olafare, around 10:30 pm on Tuesday, was assisted by chiefs and close aides, in welcoming the new wife into the palace.

Nengi’s Range Rover reportedly confiscated by the EFCC

Reality TV star, Nengi Rebecca Hampson’s Range Rover worth 3.7m naira has allegedly been confiscated by the EFCC.

According to reports by Twitter user identified as @folushaw Nengi’s Manfriend Michael Diongoli who has reportedly been a Ponzi scheme operator has been arraigned in Lagos for defrauding multiple victims of 1.22 billion.

Michael allegedly financed a few projects for Nengi and they have all been reportedly seized as proceeds of crime.

EFCC arrests Ogun Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo in Lagos


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo at the Muritala Muhammad Airport, Lagos State.

Oluomo was arrested over allegations bordering on financial crimes.

A staff member at the assembly who pleaded anonymity said the speaker was picked up this morning at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, by operatives following a tip-off.

He was said to have been on the wanted list of the commission following his failure to honour EFCC invitation several times.
