Gas tanker explodes killing 8 in Johannesburg


A gas tanker apparently stuck under a bridge exploded in Johannesburg on Saturday (December 24), killing eight people, injuring scores more and damaging nearby buildings, emergency services said.

The blast broke the roof of the emergency department at the Tambo Memorial hospital, destroyed two houses and several cars, and injured bystanders.

The vehicle caught fire while under a low bridge, but emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi said investigations were ongoing.

Here’s how much money you get for winning the World Cup

14 year old prayed for father to win Glo car

For 48-year-old Afolabi Job, Globacom must have been sent to answer the
prayer of his teenage son who on Monday December 19 prayed that God
would surprise his father with another car, his old car having packed
up. That prayer came true as he won a brand new car in the ongoing Glo
Festival of Joy promo.

Two hours after his son’s prayer, Job got a call from Glo officials
informing him that his number had been drawn as winner of a brand new
car in the promo.  Afolabi, an employee of Zartech Farms in Oluyole
Estate, Ibadan, explained at the presentation of prizes to him and other
winners in Ibadan on Tuesday, December 20, that he once drove a
functional car but had to park it when he could no longer maintain it.

Money Laundering: Kogi Gov’s Nephew Arraigned for N10bn Fraud


Justice James Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, remanded Ali Bello, a nephew to Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello and one Dauda Sulaiman in prison pending the fulfilment of their bail conditions

They were remanded upon arraignment alongside one Abdulsalami Hudu, Cahier of Kogi State House Administration ( now at large) on a 10-count charge of misappropriation and money laundering

Bello and Sulaiman are accused of fraudulently withdrawing a sum of N10, 270,556,800 (Ten Billion, Two Hundred and Seventy Million, Five Hundred and Fifty-six Thousand Eight Hundred Naira), from the Kogi State treasury, which they delivered to a Bureau de Change operator, Rabiu Tafada in Abuja to keep or change to foreign currencies for personal gains.

Court Sends Okupe to Jail for N702m Scam


Doyin Okupe, former Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, and chieftain of the Labour party is to spend two years in prison following his conviction on December 19, 2022 by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court Abuja.

In a well-considered judgment, the trial court held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, successfully established its case against Okupe,that evidence before it established that the defendant had in the discharge of his official duties, accepted cash payments that were above the statutory threshold, without recourse to a financial institution.

It was alleged that Okupe received funds from the office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, which he could not account for. He was convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment on counts 34 to 59.

The charges are centered on accusations of receiving various sums ranging from N10million in different occasions from 2012 to 2015 from ONSA when he was senior special assistant on public affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The court however gave the defendant an option of N500,000 fine on each of the counts.

He was however discharged on counts one to 33 which bordered on money laundering and criminal breach of trust

Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties to win World Cup

 


Argentina won the World Cup on Sunday, defeating defending champions France 4-2 on penalties, following a dramatic 3-3 draw after extra time.

Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez saved Kingsley Coman's penalty and Aurelien Tchouameni fired wide before substitute right-back, Gonzalo Montiel, stepped up and converted his spot kick to give Argentina their first world title since 1986, and third overall.

France had come from two goals down to level over 90 minutes with Kylian Mbappe netting twice in two minutes, including an 80th-minute penalty.

The France striker completed his hat-trick in the 118th with another spot-kick after Argentina's Lionel Messi had tapped in for a 3-2 lead in the 109th.

Argentina had gone 2-0 up in the first half with Messi, making a record-breaking 26th World Cup appearance, converting a 23rd-minute penalty.

They struck again with a sublime four-pass counter-attack as Alexis Mac Allister's cutback found Angel Di Maria and he finished well.

Telecoms and digital service provider, Globacom, on Tuesday presented a brand new Kia car to the latest winner in Ijebu Ode, Ogun state. 27-year-old newly graduated hairdresser, Temitope Bakare, was presented with the keys to her brand new car at the Gloworld Outlet in Ijebu Ode.


Winners of other items such as generators, sewing machines and rechargeable fans were also presented with their prizes at the event.

Reuters reveals how Nigerian army allegedly run a 'secret abortion programme'


Since at least 2013, the Nigerian Army has run a secret, systematic and illegal abortion programme in the country’s northeast, terminating at least 10,000 pregnancies among women and girls, many of whom had been kidnapped and raped by Islamist militants, according to dozens of witness accounts and documentation reviewed by Reuters.

Nigerian military leaders denied the abortion programme ever took place during an interview with Reuters in November.

The abortions mostly were carried out without the person’s consent – and often without their prior knowledge, according to the witness accounts. The women and girls ranged from a few weeks to eight months pregnant, and some were as young as 12 years old, interviews and records showed.

EFCC Arraigns Ex-Union Bank Staff, Two Others for Alleged N1.4bn Fraud in Lagos


The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, December 5, 2022, arraigned a former employee of Union Bank PLC , Abdulmalik Salau, alongside Ismaila Yousuf Atumeyi and Ngene Joshua Dominic before Justice Tjinani G. Ringim of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos on an 18-count charge bordering on an alleged cybercrime and money laundering to the tune of N1, 403, 343, 400.00(One Billion, Four Hundred and Three Million, Three Hundred and Forty-three Thousand, Four Hundred Naira).

One of the counts reads: “That you, Abdulmalik Salau, between August and October, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, without lawful authority, directly caused modification of data held in the network of Union Bank Plc leading to the fraudulent transfer of the total sum of N1, 403, 343, 400.00( One Billion, Four Hundred and Three Million, Three Hundred and Forty-three Thousand, Four Hundred Naira) to the account of FAV Oil and Gas Limited and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 16(1) of Cybercrimes( Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.”

Warri Banker takes home Glo brand new car in Warri


 A 52-year-old Manager with a first generation bank, Anthony Ukpu, has

taken home a brand new car he won in the ongoing Glo Festival of Joy

D’banj arrested, detained for N-Power project fraud


The ICPC has arrested and detained Oladapo Oyebanji, more known by his stage name, D’banj.

The musician was arrested and detained Tuesday after ICPC operatives closed in on him, forcing him to surrender himself at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, sources familiar with the matter said.

D’banj, insiders said, had dodged summons for weeks, claiming to be overseas for scheduled concerts each time he was invited to appear for interrogation over fraud allegation.

Alleged N260m Fraud: Court Sends Ex-Gusau Varsity VC, Prof. Garba to 35 Years in Prison


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, December 1, 2022 secured the conviction of Professor Magaji Garba, a former Vice Chancellor of Federal University Gusau, as Justice Maryam Hassan Aliyu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Garki, Abuja, found guilty of a five count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and forgery and sentenced him to 35 years jail term.

Garba was arraigned by the EFCC on October 12, 2021, for allegedly extorting various sums from a contractor on the pretext of awarding him a N3 billion contract for the perimeter wall fencing of the University.

Senator Bassey Jailed 42Years for Money Laundering


Albert Bassey, senator representing Akwa Ibom North East at the National Assembly was on Thursday, December 1, 2022 convicted and sentenced to 42 years imprisonment by Justice Agatha Okeke of the Federal High, Uyo, Akwa Ibom state. The court found him guilty of six-count of money laundering preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Senator Bassey was prosecuted by the anti-graft agency on allegation of receiving vehicle valued at N204 million as bribe from companies linked to one Olajide Omokore, a contractor who executed a N3billion contract for the Government of Akwa Ibom State whilst Senator Bassey was Commissioner for finance and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Direct Labour Coordinating Committee.
