Sahara Energy’s co-founder, Tonye Cole’s plan to be the governorship
candidate of All Progressive Congress, APC, in Rivers State come 2019 is
causing crisis in the party in the state.
A newcomer in politicking, the oil magnate
would ordinarily not have
been a serious contender in the race but for Minister of Transportation and
former governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi.
Amaechi’s alleged declaration that Cole is his candidate as made the
latter the candidate to beat and thrown Rivers State chapter of APC into crisis
ahead of the 2019 general elections.
OrijoReporter gathered that the likes of Senator Magnus Abe,
representing Rivers South East Senatorial district; and the party’s
governorship candidate in 2015 and director general of Nigerian Maritime
Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside are not letting go
without a fight.
Particularly irked by Amaechi’s support for Cole is reportedly Senator
Abe. The minister supported Peterside against the senator to emerge as APC
governorship candidate in 2015.
It was further gathered that Amaechi’s support for the billionaire oil
tycoon was owing to his greater financial muscle that would enable the party to
hold its own against the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Gov.
Nyesom Wike, who will be seeking re-election.
