The Minister of Sports,
Dr. Tammy Danagogo, has fired the Director General of the National Sports
Commission, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye.
In Elegbeleye’s stead, as
earlier reported during the week by The Eagle Online, Danagogo has appointed
Al-Hassan Yakmut, a Director in the Ministry of Sports, as acting DG.
Danagogo’s letter sacking
Elegbeleye was dated April 16, 2015.
However, The Eagle Online
had to retract the earlier story because our source could not obtain the sack
and appointment letter as promised.
It was learnt that
President Goodluck Jonathan approved the sacking of Elegbeleye on April 15,
2015.
However, the Secretary to
the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, was said to be opposed to
the move.
Anyim thus refused to issue the letter of sack.
Anyim thus refused to issue the letter of sack.
While it was an open
secret in the Minister of Sports that Elegbeleye was only marking time, the
refusal of Anyim to obey the presidential order kept the sports world on the
edge.
Yakmut is said to be the
most senior technocrat in the NSC.
Danagogo’s Special Adviser
on Media, Patrick Omorodion, said Yakmut’s appointment was in keeping with the
tradition of appointing a technocrat to head the Commission.
An ex-volleyball player,
Yakmut holds a Bachelors Degree in Physical and Health Education from the
Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and a Masters Degree from the Obafemi Awolowo
University, Ile-Ife
